PICT Project 2011

Location: New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science in Albuquerque

Sometime, somehow, somewhere, life on Earth began. How exactly the first living organisms emerged on a lifeless planet is the subject of intense and promising research throughout the world, including scientists working both in research institutions and in the field in New Mexico.

Project Description: This current research will inform a new exhibit on the origin of life at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science in Albuquerque designed by media arts students in PICT: the Program in Interactive Cultural Technology at New Mexico Highlands University in collaboration with scientists at the world renowned Santa Fe Institute (SFI), and museum staff.

Student teams will work on 2D design, object-based displays, 3D video, interactive and virtual components, and social media that will keep exhibit content current as the science unfolds. The outcome will be a temporary exhibit, which will be used as the basis and a proving ground for the museum's new permanent origin-of-life exhibit gallery.

What did I learn from the course? I learned many things, but the most valuable lesson was the best experience you can get is from just getting in there and doing it. Throughout my college years I have sat in classroom after classroom and heard lecture after lecture but there is nothing like real world application. Hope Trujillo, former student
