“I’ve never before worked with such a professional team of documentary artists. Had they not approached me and proposed this exciting project, the public would be denied the rich legacy of the behind-the-scenes creative work artists do before the exhibition.”-Lance Fung, curator of the SITE Santa Fe biennial, Lucky Number 7
"It was a real adventure working with two Highlands interns to realize my concept of 5 minute video episodes that would animate unexpected treasures in museum collections by tapping the interpretive passion of museum professionals. We were helped through the challenges by the dedicated mentoring of professor Kerry Loewen. We can all be proud of the two films we created to serve as pilots for a Treasuring series and for models of a new format. "- Penelope Hunter-Stiebel, independent curator
"My business has benefited tremendously from hiring an NMHU media arts student. Kristin has the breadth of knowledge and attention to detail that usually only comes after several years in a profession. It is clear that NMHU has placed equal emphasis on theory and real-world skills."- Molly Duncan, Owner and Creative Director, Desert Elements Design, Santa Fe
I worked on a 17th century 3-D Palace of the Governors. I photographed several adobe buildings and built a small texture library. I planned a floor plan based on given research and information. From there I built the building from the ground up including features such as beams of doors and windows, latillas and vigas. If I had more time, I could have added more details to the building, such as nicer fireplaces or rugs to the floors. I think I improved on my technical 3-D skills and advanced my knowledge in Sketch-Up, the program I used to build the Palace. I also learned that not all research is done in a library. Research can be done just by looking and exploring places and talking with knowledgeable people."-Jessica Lin Power, graduate student
"Well this project has been an experience. The result is amazing. I don't think any of us could have guessed the final product would be as great as it is. The website, monitors, and DVD have all been hits and serve a purpose. So thank you again. Not bad for us to complete what we set out to do in January. Having this amazing chance to document and get to know all this different people has not only been groundbreaking, but flat out fun. I've learned and hopefully taught alot. Thank you again Mimi for introducing me to this project. I'm proud to have been a part of the Lucky Number 7 community."-Kenny Bachicha, graduate
"The experience connected us and strengthened our understanding of group work ethics. The need to keep each other updated with graphics and materials was intense. I thought that this was a learning experience beyond anything you could imagine. I feel the final outcome of the exhibition design course was interesting to say the least."-Josh Clark, student
"I really enjoyed working with the team, I feel a strong sense of camaraderie, as a team, we produced an amazing product within a very short time frame."-Helen Rinke, graduate
"What did I learn from the course? I learned many things, but the most valuable lesson was the best experience you can get is from just getting in there and doing it. Throughout my college years I have sat in classroom after classroom and heard lecture after lecture but there is nothing like real world application."-Hope Trujillo, former student
"I have worked in a team to produce a traveling museum exhibit. I feel like this was where I was able to put my education all into one class and see what the turnout would be. I used skills from Color Theory, Visual Concepts, Videography, Flash, and the understanding of all the applications. I learned what it's like to be part of a team and when things get tough, we just kept fighting through it. We are a family now."-Le'Andrea Esquibel, student
"Things went really well. It was a long drive but the weather was cool and Silver City is very much like Trinidad (I really liked it). The interview lasted 5 hours and we got along well. Believe it or not goats became a main part of discussion at one point, and my being able to milk a goat is apparently a bonus. Before it was all over I ended up going out to their farm and had to catch a goat (while wearing my high-heeled sandals). Go ahead and laugh but I'm not joking, I really had to catch a baby goat! Anyway, the long and short of it is, it went well!"-Kyla Clark, graduate, describing her job interview with Karen Carr Studio
"When my husband got the opportunity to come to New Mexico Highlands University with a graduate assistanceship, I came a long for the ride. Being here in this great new state has been an amazing trip. I am now on the road to a Bachelor's in Fine Art with a degree in Media Arts emphasizing Digital Filmmaking and another Bachelor's in Liberal Arts. When I am finished here at Highlands University I fancy the idea of carrying on my filmmaking into the field of Digital Animation or Video Game Design. My name is Veronica Black and I am a traveler on a colossal adventure."-Veronica Black, student
"We have been absolutely delighted with Kyla's skills, her bright personality and her wonderful work ethic. She has definitely hit the ground running and has been effective and useful from day one. We are very pleased and feel we have been lucky to find her. We are so impressed with Miriam's program and would recommend to any employer that they look to her students for new hires." --Karen Carr, Karen Carr Studio
"One pretty awesome moment for me was being up on stage and being asked the brass tacks question ‘How do we actually teach this stuff to art students?' and seeing two women at the back of the room, Kara Pajewski and Lauren Addario, students at the New Mexico Highlands University jumping up and down saying: It's already happening and we're doing it! I learned later that another student attending the conference, Jonathan Lee, was responsible for much of programming work on the project American Image: The Photographs of John Collier Jr. Hats off to Miriam Langer, Chair of the Communications and Fine Arts Department at the University, for that. Yay!"-Aaron Straup Cope, Senior Engineer, Flickr, blogging from the 2008 Museums & the Web Conference in Montreal
"I can't begin to tell you how much fun I'm having here! The job is so great (I can't wait to get there most mornings!) Thanks for all your help in getting me here." --Kyla Clark, graduate
"The new job at OMSI [Oregon Museum of Science & Industry, Portland] is going great! I am loving every second of it. I am doing something different everyday, learning a lot, and just trying to take it all in. I feel that the job I have now is a perfect fit. Thank you again for the recommendation. I will join NMHU Media Arts on Facebook and offer any advice I can."--Michael A. Alaniz, graduate
